This film although very entertaining, had very little to do with the Hispanic culture. It is more of a world wide problem. Our teems are desensitized to sex and drugs because it is a part of there life everyday, on TV at school and with there friends. Sad to say but if we think our children are above this we are just closing our eyes to everything that is revolving around them.
The teens in this movie seem to be let loose to do what ever they want. How old are they at this time? It seems that the families are too busy with there own lives to care about what the children are up to. Where is the "hot climate" part of this culture?
The culture is seen more on the road side and at the beach with the family that fish for a liveing. The way they offered food and a place for them to stay after the pigs got into their camp. That was more of the warm climate feel.
I just don't think this film is saying alot for the hispanic.

El Viaje de Carol by Roberta Peterrson
This was another very good film. Although we were unable to read the subtitles you could get a good feel of what the film was all about by just the expressions on the faces of the actors and the emotion that was put into the scenes.
This was a movie about a child ( a young girl) that faces the challenges of the loss of her mother and a dear friend, being separated from her father because of the Revelation.
Before the loss of Carol's mother Carol and her mother come to live with the grandfather. Carol finds new and dear friends from local boys. Being from different social back grounds Carol find adventure in her every day activities with her new friends.
Through out the movie Carol learns of litters her mother was receiving from her father through a underground carrier. Reading the letters without her mothers knowledge Carol is able to locate her father after her mothers passing. Writing him through a teacher in town, Carol did not want to tell her father of her mothers death. The grandfather did notify the father of the death. At Carols birthday party risking his life Carols father drops a surprise for Carol from his airplane. And then risking being caught comes home to be with Carol.
During the search for Carols father by the local solders ,Carols dear friend is shot and killed by the solders when the bollet that was meant for her father struck the boy.
This film was a very difficult film to see in class the tears were hard to hold back.

Volver, by Roberta Peterson
The title return ( the dead return to fix something left undone and the return of the mother after being in hiding all this time. Also return for the events that lead to the birth of Paula, returned by Paula's father attempting to rape her.
This film was a very hart felt film. The film I feel is considered a tribute to women and their resilience in the face of life's most outrageous tribulations", is because it shows how a few women stand strong for what they feel is Justice and what they felt was the right thing to do to protect their families. Mother and daughter both ended up facing the same horrible experience of the father abusing there child in the worst way ever thought of. In there minds the death of the men was justice.
Through the film superstitious believes were talked about mostly of the dead coming back to fix something left undone this was mentioned tow times during the movie from the aunt and then the sister Sole spoke of not driving in the dark. The real live aspects I think was the sister Sole being so afraid of being around the dead, this also made it easy for her to believe that her mother was a ghost.

Guantanamera by Roberta Peterson
This movie had Cuba all over it . The music throughout the movie set the scenes. The family values of caring for there loved one even after death. Going to such lengths to carry out the wise of a loved one. The trip alone would have made me change my mind about where she was going to be baried. Through out the movie at every stop they had coffee and even rum at some stops. the road side stands of fruit along the way.
The movie was a good story of how love can be looked over until the most inopportune times and I think a country of romance such as Cuba was a very good choice for filming.
The moods were set with the music and the passion of the lovers. The strong believes of spirits were also seen through out with the spirit of the old lady coming back as the child the old man remembered being in love with.
This film also demonstrated allot on dogmatism. I feel it was a very good culture film

The Official Story by Roberta Peterson
This story starts in Argentina seems to be around 1970's. Alecia is a history teacher at a school for boys. She is married to Roberto and has a daughter Gabby.
Alecia is very serious about her teaching the students being young boys enjoy giving her a hard time. They tend to do their best to upset her during the class time. Alecia states' " Understanding history/ Understand the world.
Gabby the child, is a very beautiful Little girl that seem to be very well cared for and is loved very much by her mother and father. Gabby loves to sing to her mom and dad.
Anna a childhood friend of Alecia returns from being gone for seven years. Anna and Alecia have a good time talking about the past and drinking wine. Then Anna tells Alecia about her experience of being abducted and held captive. She told of being tortured, probed to tell what she new of the military and her head being placed in a bucket of water. Then she told of mothers being brought in with there child and the child being taken and never brought back. Anna also told of woman coming in pregnant and the babies taken from them. some were even aborted.
Alecia started thinking back; Gabby was adopted. Roberto brought her home said she had been given to them from a dieing woman.
On the streets hundreds of people are protesting about the military taking men and kidnapping women and children. Demanding them to be returned to there families.
Alecia becomes obsests with the idea that Gabby could be one of the missing. She starts her own investigation to try to find out about where Gabby came from and eventually finds what could be Gabby's grandmother. Alecia invites the lady to her home, when Roberto sees that Alecia has taken things to this point he becomes very defencive and angry. After the lady leaves Roberto discovers that Gabby was not home, that Alecia had sent her with her family to spend the night, Roberto became violent hurting Alecia.
Although the movie dose not really say but it is insinuated that Roberto had something to do with the missing people. I think Alecia found this out or a least felt that her did by his actions. At the end Alecia leaves Roberto.
During the movie Alecia tells of being a small child waiting in a rocking chair waiting for her grandmother. Her grandmother never showed because she was killed. But Alecia said she just kept rocking and waiting. Her feeling of being alone waiting for someone that would never return and the love for her own grandmother gave Alecia the passion and drive to try and find if Gabby had someone that loved her that much waiting for her. I don't think it was that she wanted to give up Gabby I think it was that she didn't want to be the cause of anyone hurting like she did. Alecia had felt the pain that the people in the streets looking for there loved ones felt and she could not bare the pain.

Like Water for Chocolate by Roberta Peterson
This film was very hot, I loved it.
The Spanish people, especially the females; are very dramatic and over dramatize everything that happens out of the normal daily routine. ( from my insight being married into a Spanish family for thirteen years.)This movie was a good example of this. The " Magic dramatize" was seen thought the movie starting with the onions, the birth of Tita, down to end of the movie with Tita burning herself to death after the death of her lover, which died in her arms while makeing love to her.
The passions of all were very intense. The Mother's hate fullness and being hard on her daughters, the way she spoke to them and then agreeing to let Pedro marry Tita's sister but not Tita. We seen the magic dramatizm with the of the "black hole " when Tita described the pain she was feeling when Pedro married Rosaura. The speels that were placed on the meals Tita cooked with her emotions she was feeling while she was preparing them.
The film was very well told of the passion Tita and Pedro had for each other and the difficulties they had just being together. Pedro married Tita's sister just to be able to be close to Tita, after was forbidden to marry because she was the youngest daughter.
Pedro and Rosaura was married but did not engage in sex to unify the marriage until three months later and only after Pedro praied and and acked for forgiveness.
Roses were delivered to Tita. Mother insisted Tita through them out. Instead she used them to cook a special meal " chicken with rose sauce". The meal had special powers that let not only Pedro feel Titas passion but everyone that ate it. The blood from the thorns of the roses that scratched Tita was cooked into to sauce. This became an over coming power that seem to turn the heat up just a bit. The magic spell this time being one of passion caused not only Pedro to become a little warm but Gertrudies was so hot she caught the shower house on fire. Then ran off " naked " with the captin.
After Rosaura and Pedros second child and baby girl was born, Rosaura spoke the words that went through Tita. The girl was to never marry because she would be the youngest daughter. Tita prepared a meal for Rosaura. This meal was eventually the cause of Rosauras death.
Several years later in 1938 the baby girl, Esperneda was grown and married. That night Tita chose Pedro over John. Pedro died in Titas arms making love to Tita for the first time that they did not have to hide it from anyone. Tita remembered back to the story that John had told her about the book of matches and burned herself to death along with the body of her lover Pedro.
This was all a story of how a cook book came to be.

Diarios de Motocicleta by Roberta Peterson
This film was an exciting and emotional film. I enjoyed it very much. I felt the excitement as " Fuser was getting ready for his trip. I laughed about the many times they crashed. I felt the pain and sorrow of the people being forced from their homes, the sadness of the sick and the isolated.
I can see many scenes throughout the film that could have plaid the role of influence to encourage Ernesto to become a rebel for Peru. The way the poor were treated by the land owners and the Government backing them. Putting them out with no place to go, no money, no food, sleeping on the side of the roads.
Ernesto and Alberto were out for an adventure, to tour there home land. What started as an adventure became a life changing experience for the both of them.
Ernesto started out being the shy, quiet one with not much to say. Seem to be the follower. Ernesto had allot of family support. Good family values. Ernesto also had a good education; studding to become a doctor of medicines.
Alberto seem to be the more adventurist kind. Out spoken, load and fun loving. Alberto seem to have a very deep Passion for his bike. Seem to not have anyone else in his life except for his friends.
The men's adventure was long and hard. The struggles they encountered were more then I felt the two expected. The fun they had I felt help to build a much deeper bond between them. The sick people they seen and tried to help along the way helped to build the caricature of the men. They truly wanted to help others and to make a difference in others lives they met.
In the beginning it was all about the fun they could have, but by the time they arrived at the Inca tribe I think the way they seen life had changed.
Ernesto was a very honest person unable to lie. On the opposite side Alberto was a "jokester" could bluff his way out of every situation. The differences in the two made them a good team, for the film and for real life.
